What we’ll be writing about here

This is where we’ll be writing about the unglamorous half of running a business — the systems underneath the finance function, and what happens when they stop keeping up.

We’re a small firm and we’d rather publish something worth reading occasionally than something forgettable every week. So expect a handful of pieces a quarter, drawn from work we’ve actually done rather than whatever the industry is talking about.

What we’ll cover

• When to leave QuickBooks — and when not to. The honest signals, including the ones that suggest you should stay put another year.
• Multi-state sales tax. What it actually takes to configure it properly, using California as the worked example, because California is where most systems fall over.
• Choosing between Sage Intacct, NetSuite and Odoo without a vendor in the room.
• Integration in practice. Why duplicate entry survives every attempt to stamp it out, and what finally kills it.
• Reporting people trust. Getting from a dashboard nobody opens to numbers a CEO acts on.
• Cleanup work. What reconstructing several years of books actually involves, and how to avoid needing it again.

What we won’t do

No listicles, no vendor press releases, and no posts that exist purely to rank for something. If a piece isn’t useful to a finance lead or an operations manager trying to make a real decision, it doesn’t go up.
